Start Your Healthcare Planning Conversation Today

| By Jodi Horton

It’s a whole new year, and we’re welcoming 2016 wholeheartedly because it means doctors can now be reimbursed for advance healthcare planning conversations with patients.

We firmly believe these healthcare planning conversations are vital for families, to ensure that medical decisions can be made clearly and with certainty in times of healthcare crisis. All adults, regardless of current health status, should take the time to choose a person they trust to be their healthcare power of attorney.

At your next doctor’s visit, talk to your doctor about how much treatment you would want if you had a terminal illness. Talk about your desire for aggressive treatment balanced with how you define quality of life. Go home and tell your family members about this conversation. Write it all down in an advance directive document. Make plans to review your advance directive on an annual basis.

Want to get started before you even talk to your doctor? Request a free copy of the Five Wishes from Casa de la Luz Foundation. Use it to name your healthcare agent, to spell out what kinds of life-sustaining treatments you would or wouldn’t want, and even to detail how you would want to be remembered and memorialized by your loved ones.

Casa de la Luz Hospice provides hospice care for individuals with a life-limiting illness who reside in Pima County or southern Pinal County. For more information about our services, call 520.544.9890.
