Choosing a Different Healthcare Path

| By Jodi Horton

When it comes to your healthcare, you have choices. We want you to know that hospice care is one of your choices.

Too many people see hospice care as the choice between continuing a fight and giving up treatment. Hospice care is a treatment and a plan of care. It is a choice to be at home, as nurses and other healthcare professionals visit you and manage your symptoms so that you are comfortable and still enjoying life.

Sometimes when we talk about hospice care, the phrase “giving up” is applied to hospice. However, you should never think about hospice care as giving up. We aren’t giving up on your comfort, your quality of life, or managing your symptoms. Our hospice staff members will talk with you about your goals to ensure that your plan of care meets your needs. When you choose hospice care, you are choosing to focus on quality of life, not quantity of life.

When asking the question, “What more can be done?,” also ask, “At what and whose benefit?” Your goals may be different from someone else’s, and it’s important to evaluate treatment based on what you want. When it comes to living your life, it should always be your choice.

If you’d like to learn more about hospice care, we are happy to take the time to explain how hospice care supports patients and their families. A nurse will visit you to explain our services and evaluate whether or not hospice care is an appropriate option for your health needs. This visit is completely free to you, and you do not have to make a commitment to signing up for our services.
