Three Tips to Prepare for Your Assisted Living Facility Search

| By Jodi Horton

It isn’t easy to make the decision to move Mom or Dad into an assisted living facility or adult care home, but sometimes it’s the best choice left. But when there are hundreds of places to choose from, how do you know which option is the best one? Here are some tips to help you get started.

  1. Start the search early, before the need even arises. Like any major life decision, you want to be as prepared as possible. Ease the stress of this decision by beginning your search early, and give yourself the time to research and visit various facilities and homes.
  2. Prepare a list of questions and have it with you when interviewing facilities. Keep your list of questions with any handouts you receive from the facility, and keep each facility’s paperwork separate for better organization.
  3. Check online for any deficiencies in state surveys and read online reviews. If anything jumps out at you, don’t be afraid to ask the facility about the problem and how it was addressed. The Arizona Dept. of Health Services offers Arizona Care Check, an online search to find deficiencies against facilities in Arizona.
