We’re encouraged by every news article we read about family caregivers because we hope it means more attention will be given to the struggles family caregivers face daily. Learn more about the challenges of being a caregiver in these articles from USA Today and the Kansas City Star.

Are you a fan of TED Talks? We’ve found plenty of inspiring TED Talks, and we also enjoy the TEDMED ones. We found a great one this week by Kelli Swazey, who offers a really interesting lesson on how another culture ritualizes death and the funeral. “What happens when we welcome death in defining life?” is a nice opportunity to explore another perspective.

The philosophy of hospice care has always emphasized the patient as a whole, recognizing each individual for their personal, emotional, and spiritual needs in addition to their medical needs. Caring for our patients has always included conversations about the patient’s goals and personal wishes so it’s exciting to see how research can encourage medicine to have more active discussions with patients about their care. It’s very exciting to read that renowned surgeon Dr. Atul Gawande is tackling the issue at his new health care innovation center, Ariadne Labs. Learn more in this article, “Think Tank Aims To Solve End Of Life Issues.”
